Which Apple Watch Strap Fits My Watch? A Size Guide (Sri Lanka, 2026)

Apple Watch bands come in two families — 38/40/41mm and 42/44/45/49mm — and any band in your family fits. Here's how to find your case size, what fits what, and how 20mm/22mm lug widths work for Android smartwatches.

update Published 14 August 2026

The single most common ordering mistake with watch straps is buying the wrong size — and it’s an easy mistake to make, because Apple lists band sizes in a way that looks stricter than it is.

Here’s the short answer, then the detail.

Apple Watch: there are only two sizes that matter

Apple Watch bands come in two compatible families. Any band in your family fits your watch, regardless of which exact case size the box mentions.

FamilyCase sizes it fits
Small38mm · 40mm · 41mm · 42mm (newer slim cases)
Large42mm (older cases) · 44mm · 45mm · 46mm · 49mm

So a band sold as “42mm/44mm/45mm/49mm” — the way most straps in our range are labelled — is a large-family band. It fits any watch in that family.

The one confusing case is 42mm. The original 42mm Apple Watch takes large-family bands, but Apple’s newer 42mm case is a slimmer redesign that takes small-family bands. If your watch is a recent model, check the family rather than assuming from the number. When a listing gives a full run of sizes, that run is the family — trust it over the single number.

If you’re crossing families, the band won’t slide in. It isn’t a tight fit you can force; the lug is a different width.

How to check your case size in 30 seconds

  1. On your iPhone, open the Watch app.
  2. Tap General → About.
  3. Read the Model line — the case size in millimetres is listed there.

No iPhone to hand? Measure the case height — the metal body top to bottom, not the screen — with a ruler. It will land close to one of 38, 40, 41, 42, 44, 45, 46 or 49mm. Don’t measure the strap you already own; measure the watch.

Android and other smartwatches: measure the lug width

Non-Apple smartwatches don’t work in families. They use a lug width — the gap between the two points where the strap attaches to the case.

  • Measure that gap in millimetres.
  • It will almost always be 20mm or 22mm.
  • Buy that width, from any brand.

This is why “universal 20mm/22mm” straps exist and why they’re good value: one strap fits watches from many different makers. Xiaomi’s Mi Band series is the notable exception — those use a proprietary fitting, so buy a strap made for the specific band model.

Which material to buy in Sri Lanka

Climate matters more here than it does in the marketing copy.

  • Silicone / sport — the practical default. Handles sweat, rain and humidity, rinses under a tap, dries fast. If you only own one strap, own this one.
  • Nylon / sport loop — light and breathable, comfortable in heat, adjusts anywhere. Takes longer to dry than silicone.
  • Milanese / steel mesh — smart, magnetically adjustable to any wrist size. Traps moisture against the skin during exercise, so it’s a work-and-evening strap rather than a gym one.
  • Leather — the most formal option, and the one that ages fastest in humidity. Sweat darkens and stiffens it. Keep it for occasions.
  • Alpine / rugged loop — built for outdoor use and secure under load.

A common, sensible setup is two straps: silicone for daily wear and workouts, something smarter for work.

Changing the strap

  • Apple Watch — press and hold the small button on the underside of the case and slide the band out sideways. It takes seconds and needs no tool. Slide the new one in until it clicks.
  • Quick-release 20mm/22mm straps — move the tiny lever on the spring bar with a fingernail, lift the strap out, reverse to fit.
  • Plain spring bars — you’ll need a spring bar tool. They cost very little and save scratching the case with a screwdriver.

Before you order

  • Confirm your case size (Apple) or lug width (everything else). This is the only thing that can go wrong.
  • Check whether you want the case-and-strap combo — some listings include a protective bumper with the band.
  • If your watch is a Mi Band, Huawei GT, Amazfit or Fitbit, buy a strap named for that model, not a universal one.

Frequently asked questions

Will a 42mm Apple Watch band fit a 45mm Apple Watch? expand_more

Yes. Apple Watch bands fall into two compatible families rather than one size per watch. Bands made for 38mm, 40mm and 41mm cases fit each other, and bands made for 42mm, 44mm, 45mm and 49mm cases fit each other. So a 42mm band fits a 45mm watch, and a 38mm band fits a 41mm watch. What does not work is crossing between the two families — a 40mm band will not fit a 45mm case.

How do I find out what size my Apple Watch is? expand_more

Open the Watch app on your iPhone, go to General, then About, and read the Model line — the case size in millimetres is listed there. If you have the original box, the size is printed on the label. Failing both, measure the case height (top to bottom, not the screen) with a ruler: it will be close to one of 38, 40, 41, 42, 44, 45, 46 or 49mm.

What size strap does an Android smartwatch use? expand_more

Android and other non-Apple smartwatches are measured by lug width — the gap between the two points where the strap attaches — not by case size. The two common widths are 20mm and 22mm. Measure that gap with a ruler and buy the matching width. Unlike Apple, the same 22mm strap will fit watches from many different brands, which is why universal 20mm/22mm straps exist.

Are Apple Watch straps interchangeable between series? expand_more

Largely yes, within a family. Apple has kept the same band attachment since the first Apple Watch, so a band from an old Series 3 still clips into a current watch as long as the sizes are in the same family. That is unusual in the industry and it means a band you already own is rarely wasted when you upgrade.

Which strap material is best for Sri Lanka's climate? expand_more

Silicone, for most people, most of the time. It shrugs off sweat, humidity and rain, rinses clean under a tap and dries in minutes — all of which matter in a hot, humid climate. Leather absorbs sweat and will darken and stiffen over time, and steel Milanese loops trap moisture against the skin during workouts. Many people keep a silicone strap for daily wear and exercise and a metal or leather one for occasions.

Do watch straps come with the tool needed to fit them? expand_more

Apple Watch straps need no tool at all — press the release button on the back of the case and slide the old band out sideways. Traditional 20mm/22mm straps use spring bars, and most quick-release versions have a small lever on the bar that you move with a fingernail, so no tool is needed there either. Older straps without quick-release pins need a spring bar tool, which is inexpensive.
