USB-C Cables Explained: Why They're Not All the Same

Why one USB-C cable charges fast and another crawls, why some carry video and others don't, and how to pick the right charging cable in Sri Lanka without overpaying.

Two USB-C cables can look identical, cost wildly different amounts, and behave nothing alike. One charges your laptop at full speed and drives a monitor; the other trickles power to your phone and cannot carry video at all. The connector shape tells you nothing about what is inside.

Here is what actually differs, and what to check before buying.

The connector is not the spec

USB-C describes the plug — the small reversible oval. It says nothing about the cable’s capabilities. Three separate things vary independently:

  1. Power — how many watts it can carry.
  2. Data — how fast it moves files, from USB 2.0 speeds up to 40Gbps.
  3. Video — whether it can drive a display at all.

A cheap cable will typically be decent at exactly one of these and poor at the other two. This is why “it’s USB-C, it’ll work” so often turns out to be wrong.

Power: the number that decides charging speed

Cables carry a wattage rating, and it acts as a hard ceiling:

If your charger, phone and cable disagree, the lowest rating wins. A 65W charger, a laptop that accepts 65W and a 60W cable gives you 60W — the cable is the bottleneck.

One more trap: USB-A to USB-C cables cannot deliver modern fast charging. The older rectangular USB-A plug does not support USB Power Delivery. If you want fast charging, both ends need to be USB-C. Data and video are separate again

A cable can carry 100W of power and still be a USB 2.0 cable for data — 480Mbps, which is slow for moving files off a drive. Manufacturers do this deliberately because charging cables do not need fast data, and it keeps costs down.

Video is stricter still. Driving a monitor over USB-C requires DisplayPort Alt Mode or Thunderbolt support. Most charging cables simply do not have the wiring for it. If the listing does not explicitly mention video output, assume it cannot do it — this is the single most common cause of “my monitor won’t connect”.

Which connector do you actually need?

  • USB-C to USB-C — modern Android phones, iPhone 15 and newer, iPads, most laptops. This is the default now.
  • USB-C to Lightning — iPhone 14 and older. Needed for fast charging an older iPhone; a USB-A to Lightning cable will be noticeably slower.
  • USB-A to USB-C — for older chargers, power banks and car sockets that only have the rectangular port. Convenient, but never fast.
  • Micro USB — older budget phones, many power banks, and a lot of Bluetooth speakers and accessories. Still worth owning one.

Length costs you power

Longer cables lose more energy over the run. A 2m cable will charge slightly slower than an identical 1m one, and the gap widens at higher wattages.

The practical approach is to buy the shortest cable that comfortably reaches — 1m for a desk, 2m or 3m for the sofa or bedside — rather than defaulting to the longest one.

Build quality is where cheap cables fail

Cables almost never fail in the middle. They fail at the strain point where the cord meets the connector, after months of being wound around a charger and yanked out of sockets.

That is what braiding buys you. A nylon-braided jacket resists that wear far better than thin PVC. It makes no difference at all to charging speed — it is purely a longevity feature, and usually the difference between a cable lasting three months and three years.

What to check before you buy

  1. Both connectors — USB-C to USB-C for fast charging, Lightning for older iPhones.
  2. The wattage rating — 60W for phones, 100W if a laptop is involved.
  3. Data and video, but only if you need them — do not pay for Thunderbolt to charge a phone.
  4. Length — the shortest that reaches.
  5. A braided jacket if it will be moved daily.

Why is my USB-C cable charging slowly? expand_more

Most often the cable is rated below what your charger and phone agreed on. Many bundled cables handle only 60W, and USB-A to USB-C cables cannot carry modern fast-charging speeds at all. For laptop-speed charging you need a cable rated 100W (5A). Length matters too — a 2m cable loses more over the run than a 1m one.

Are all USB-C cables the same? expand_more

No, and this is the single biggest misconception about them. Two cables with identical connectors can differ enormously in power rating (60W vs 100W vs 240W), data speed (USB 2.0 at 480Mbps up to 40Gbps) and whether they carry video at all. The connector shape tells you nothing about what is inside.

Can I use any USB-C cable to connect a monitor? expand_more

No. Plenty of USB-C charging cables carry only USB 2.0 data and no video signal whatsoever. To drive a display you need a cable that explicitly supports DisplayPort Alt Mode or Thunderbolt. If a cable's listing does not mention video, assume it will not do it.

What does the W rating on a cable mean? expand_more

It is the maximum power the cable is built to carry safely. A 60W cable handles 20V at 3A; a 100W cable uses a 5A conductor and needs an e-marker chip to tell the charger it can take that current. Using a 60W cable with a 100W charger and laptop simply means you charge at 60W — it is a bottleneck, not a hazard, with a genuine cable.

Do I need a 240W cable? expand_more

Almost certainly not. 240W (USB PD 3.1 EPR) is for high-draw gaming laptops and workstations. For a phone, tablet or ordinary laptop, a 100W cable is more than enough and usually cheaper and more flexible.
