What Wattage Charger Do I Need? A Plain-English Guide

20W, 33W, 65W or 100W — what the number on a charger actually means, why a bigger one won't make your phone charge faster, and how to pick the right wattage in Sri Lanka.

The number printed on a charger — 20W, 33W, 65W, 100W — is the single most misunderstood spec in phone accessories. The short version: it is a ceiling, not a speed. Buying a bigger number does not make your phone charge faster. Here is what actually matters.

What the wattage number really means

Wattage is the most a charger can deliver. What actually flows is negotiated between the charger, the cable and the device, and the lowest of the three wins.

So if your phone tops out at 25W:

  • A 25W charger charges it at 25W.
  • A 65W charger charges it at 25W.
  • A 100W charger charges it at 25W.

The extra capacity is not wasted — it is just spare headroom for charging something else, or something bigger later. But it buys you no speed at all on that phone.

The wattage that actually suits you

PD is what makes it “fast”

Wattage alone does not deliver fast charging. USB Power Delivery (PD) is the standard that modern devices use to negotiate over USB-C, and without it a high-wattage charger will simply trickle along at basic speed.

A related standard, PPS (Programmable Power Supply), lets the charger fine-tune voltage in small steps. Several Samsung and Xiaomi phones need PPS to reach their advertised top speed, so if you own one, look for it on the box.

The practical rule: check for PD first, then the wattage number. A 20W PD charger beats a 45W charger without it on any current phone.

GaN buys you size, not speed

GaN — gallium nitride — is a semiconductor that runs cooler and wastes less energy than the silicon in older chargers. That lets manufacturers shrink the whole thing dramatically: a 65W GaN charger is roughly the footprint of a 20W brick from a few years ago.

What GaN does not do is charge anything faster. A 65W GaN charger and a 65W silicon charger deliver identical power to the same phone. You are paying for size, weight and cooler running — genuinely worth it for travel or a tidy desk, pointless if the charger lives permanently behind furniture.

Multi-port chargers split their power

This is the detail that catches people out. A “65W dual-port” charger does not give 65W to each port. Total output is shared, and it usually redistributes the moment you plug in a second device — commonly 45W + 20W on a 65W unit.

If you plan to charge a laptop and a phone simultaneously, read the per-port breakdown on the box rather than the headline figure, and make sure the laptop’s share is enough on its own.

The cable is half the equation

A charger cannot deliver more than the cable can carry. Two things to check:

  • USB-A to USB-C cables cap out well below modern fast-charging speeds. For fast charging you want USB-C to USB-C.
  • Cables carry their own wattage rating. Many are built for 60W; you need a 100W (5A) cable for laptop-speed charging.

Buy genuine — this is where it matters most

Wattage claims on counterfeit chargers are frequently fiction, and the missing parts are exactly the ones that keep your battery healthy: voltage regulation, thermal cut-offs and over-current protection. A fake “65W” charger often cannot deliver even 20W safely.

Most phones fast-charge at 20W to 33W, so a 20W charger is the sensible default and a 33W one covers nearly everything. Your phone will only draw what it is rated for, so a 65W charger will not charge a 20W phone any faster — it simply has spare capacity for other devices.

Will a 65W charger damage my phone? expand_more

No. USB Power Delivery negotiates the voltage and current before any power flows, so the phone requests only what it can safely take. A higher-wattage charger from a reputable brand is safe; the real risk is a counterfeit charger of any rating, because fakes skip the regulation and protection circuits entirely.

Is GaN worth paying extra for? expand_more

GaN (gallium nitride) makes a charger physically smaller and cooler at the same wattage — a 65W GaN charger is roughly the size of an old 20W brick. It does not charge any faster. It is worth the premium if you travel or want one small charger on a desk, and not worth it if the charger will live behind a bedside table.

Usually the cable. A charger and phone can agree on 65W and still crawl if the cable is rated for less, or if it is a USB-A to USB-C cable, which cannot carry modern fast-charging speeds. Check the cable rating before blaming the charger. Heat also matters — phones deliberately slow charging when hot, so charging in direct sun or under a pillow will be slower.

You want USB Power Delivery (PD) on anything modern. PD is the standard that phones, tablets and laptops use to negotiate fast charging over USB-C. A high-wattage charger without PD will fall back to slow, basic charging on most current phones, so the protocol matters more than the headline number.

Yes, if it is 65W or higher with USB Power Delivery. That is enough for most 13-inch to 14-inch laptops plus a phone, though total output is shared — a 65W dual-port charger typically splits to about 45W and 20W once both ports are in use. For a larger laptop, look at 100W and above.
