How to Check if a Phone Is Genuine in Sri Lanka (IMEI & More)
Before you pay for a phone in Sri Lanka, learn how to check it's genuine and not a refurbished or fake unit — IMEI checks, box and warranty signs, and what to test in 5 minutes.
update Published 30 June 2026
A phone is one of the biggest single purchases most people make in a year — so it’s worth five minutes to confirm the one you’re buying is genuine, brand-new, and warranty-backed. Sri Lanka’s market has plenty of honest sellers, but also grey imports, refurbished units sold as new, and outright clones. Here’s exactly how to tell.
Genuine, refurbished or fake — know what you’re buying
These three get blurred all the time, so be clear before you pay:
- Genuine (brand-new): Sealed by the manufacturer, full local warranty, untouched since the factory. This is what you should expect when paying new-phone prices.
- Refurbished: A used or returned phone that’s been repaired and cleaned up. Perfectly fine if it’s disclosed and priced lower — but it should never be passed off as new.
- Fake / clone: A lookalike running modified software with cheap internals. The price is the giveaway: a “flagship” for a third of the going rate is almost never real.
The 60-second IMEI check
Every genuine phone has a unique IMEI number. Checking it is the single fastest authenticity test:
- On the phone, dial
*#06#— the IMEI appears on screen. - Compare it against the number printed on the box and in Settings → About phone.
- All three must match exactly. A mismatch — or a missing IMEI — is a serious red flag.
- Run the IMEI through the manufacturer’s official coverage/warranty checker to confirm the model and that it isn’t reported lost or blacklisted.
What else to check in 5 minutes
- Sealed box & accessories. A new phone arrives factory-sealed with the right charger, cable and paperwork for that model. Loose plastic wrap added afterwards doesn’t count.
- Build & screen. Crisp logos, even gaps, a bright correctly-coloured display. Clones often have slightly wrong fonts or a laggy interface.
- Software. Open Settings and confirm the brand, model number and Android/iOS version look right. Clones sometimes fake the “About” screen — cross-check the model number against the official spec page.
- Battery health & ports. Charge it, make a call, test the cameras and speaker. On iPhone, check Battery Health; if it’s well below 100% on a “new” phone, it’s likely used.
- Warranty paperwork. Genuine retailers provide warranty terms naming a local agent or shop. No paperwork usually means no comeback.
Why the warranty question matters most
The biggest hidden risk in Sri Lanka isn’t a fake phone — it’s a grey import with only an international warranty you can’t easily claim here. If something fails, you’re on your own. Always ask: “Is this a local warranty I can claim in Sri Lanka?” The right answer is yes, with a named provider and period.

Frequently asked questions
How do I check a phone's IMEI in Sri Lanka? expand_more
Dial *#06# on the phone to display its IMEI on screen. Check that it matches the number printed on the box and on the phone's about/settings page. All three should be identical. You can also check the IMEI against the manufacturer's official warranty or coverage checker to confirm the model and that it isn't blacklisted.
What's the difference between a genuine, refurbished and fake phone? expand_more
A genuine phone is brand-new and sealed from the manufacturer. A refurbished phone is a used or returned unit that's been repaired and resold — fine if disclosed and priced accordingly, but it should never be sold as new. A fake (or 'clone') copies the look of a popular model but uses cheap internals and counterfeit software. Always confirm which one you're buying before you pay.
Is it safe to buy a phone with cash on delivery in Sri Lanka? expand_more
Yes — cash on delivery lets you inspect the phone before you hand over money, which is one of the safest ways to buy. Power it on, run the IMEI check, confirm the box is sealed and the warranty is included, then pay. At DreamTek every phone is genuine, sealed and warranty-backed.
Does a Sri Lankan warranty work on imported phones? expand_more
Not always. Many grey-import phones only carry an international warranty that can be hard to claim locally. Buying from a retailer that supplies a local agent or shop warranty means repairs and replacements are handled here in Sri Lanka. Always ask whether the warranty is local before you buy.
