Phone Warranty in Sri Lanka Explained: Local vs International
What phone and electronics warranties actually cover in Sri Lanka — local agent vs shop vs international warranty, what voids it, and the questions to ask before you buy.
update Published 30 June 2026
“Warranty included” sounds reassuring — but in Sri Lanka the type of warranty matters more than the words on the box. A genuine phone with a warranty you can’t actually claim here is little comfort when something goes wrong. Here’s how phone and electronics warranties really work locally, and what to confirm before you pay.
The three kinds of warranty you’ll see
- Local agent warranty — backed by the brand’s authorised distributor in Sri Lanka. The strongest option: claims, repairs and replacements are handled locally through official service centres.
- Shop / dealer warranty — backed by the retailer you bought from. Quality depends entirely on the retailer, so buy from one that’s established and reachable.
- International warranty — technically global, but only practical if the brand has a local service presence. Many grey imports carry only this, which can mean shipping the device abroad to claim — slow, costly, sometimes impossible.
The headline question for any purchase: “Is this warranty claimable here in Sri Lanka?”
What a warranty usually covers — and what it doesn’t
Typically covered:
- Manufacturing defects (the screen, board, buttons or ports failing under normal use)
- Faults that appear within the warranty period through no fault of yours
Typically not covered:
- Physical damage — cracked screens, bent frames, drops
- Liquid damage
- Unauthorised repairs or opening the device
- Software tampering (rooting / jailbreaking)
- Normal battery degradation over time
How to keep your warranty valid
- Keep proof of purchase. Your DreamTek order reference or receipt is your claim ticket.
- Hold on to the box. It carries the IMEI and model number that tie the device to your warranty.
- Use authorised service only. A third-party repair — even a good one — can void the cover.
- Note the period and provider. Know when cover ends and who to contact.
Questions to ask before you buy
- Is this a local warranty I can claim in Sri Lanka?
- Who provides it — the brand’s agent or the shop?
- How long is the period?
- What’s excluded, and what proof do I need to claim?
A trustworthy seller answers all four without hesitation.

Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between a local warranty and an international warranty? expand_more
A local warranty is honoured here in Sri Lanka — by the brand's local agent or by the shop you bought from — so repairs and replacements happen without shipping the device abroad. An international (or global) warranty technically covers the device worldwide, but claiming it locally is often slow or impossible if there's no authorised service centre. For most buyers, a local warranty is far more useful.
How long is the warranty on phones in Sri Lanka? expand_more
It varies by product and provider. Many phones carry a 12-month warranty; some accessories carry shorter cover, and certain agent-backed phones offer longer. At DreamTek the exact warranty period and provider are shown on each product page so there are no surprises.
What voids a phone warranty? expand_more
Common voiders are physical damage, liquid damage, unauthorised repairs or opening the device, and software tampering such as rooting or jailbreaking. Warranties also generally exclude normal battery wear and accidental damage. Keep your proof of purchase and use authorised service to stay covered.
Do I need the box and receipt to claim a warranty? expand_more
Usually yes — keep your proof of purchase (your order reference or receipt) and ideally the box, which carries the IMEI and model details. These confirm the device is the one covered and that the warranty is still in date.
Does cash on delivery affect my warranty? expand_more
No. However you pay — cash on delivery, bank transfer or KOKO installments — the same local warranty applies. Paying on delivery just lets you inspect the phone first.
